PSB Academy, in recent years, has been named the Education Institution of the Year (APAC Insider, Singapore Business Awards 2017) and National Business Award Winner in Education (Singapore Business Review National Business Awards 2017). Other awards include Best Private Education Institution in Singapore (Business Excellence and Research Group, Icons of Learning 2016) as well as Best Private School in Singapore for Engineering(The JobsCentral Learning T.E.D. Awards 2016).
PSB Academy is EduTrust certified and also sits on the management committee of the Singapore Association for Private Education.
The school’s Engineering programmes are accredited by Engineers Australia, one of the world premier engineering bodies, and through the Washington Accord, by reciprocating bodies in the UK, the United States and other overseas countries.
The TAFEP Fair Employment Badge was awarded to PSB Academy by the Tripartite Alliance for Fair Employment Practices (TAFEP).
PSB Academy has a long history: in the past, it was formerly part of the Productivity and Standards Board of Singapore (PSB), teaching what’s arguably the equivalent of today’s Workforce Skills Qualification (WSQ) programmes to the workforce.
Today, it has come far, growing to possess an academic staff strength comprising over 600 lecturers, full-time and part-time associates. Recently, the school shifted to two new campuses: the City Campus at Marina Square in 2017, and the STEM Campus at Jackson Square earlier this year (2018). Facilities include air-conditioned common spaces, brightly coloured studios and upgraded laboratories, as well as learning resource centres. A key highlight is the grassy “town-hall” that greets you when you step into the City Campus.
PSB Academy delivers inspiring lessons to over 12,000 local and international students annually. Their diverse and dedicated pool of educators places emphasis on academic rigour and excellence and aims to equip students with knowledge and skills relevant to the industry. The school’s aim is to be “The Future Academy”, desiring to prepare its graduates to be ready for a world full of changes and uncertainty.
“I’d happily recommend PSB Academy to anyone seeking for a fully diversified and not too stressful university experience…”
This is done through constant tie-ups and collaborations with partners such as the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), VX Sports (for its Sports Science programme), as well as Pearson Education South Asia (learning platforms and educational materials). The school has also set up the “PSB Academy ASEAN Scholarship”, for students (aka ‘Future Makers’) keen on creating social impact in their communities post-graduation. Skills-focused programmes like the EC Council Certified Ethical Hacking Course have also been launched to prepare graduates against disruption.
PSB Academy also prides itself on transnational education; it has satellite campuses in China, Myanmar, Jakarta as well as Vietnam. Students can also choose to pursue a year or two of their studies on campus in their home university overseas. (Dormitories/accommodation (Dorms by PSB Academy) is also available to students, with facilities like BBQ pits and a gym.)
Class sizes vary between courses: the ratio of teachers to students generally falls between 1:30 – 1:70 for tutorials. The school’s Life Science grads have been noted to achieve good results. Its recent cohort was amongst the top 5% of La Trobe’s Bachelor of Sciences grads, both locally and in La Trobe’s home campus.
Life after graduation
“They teach you not just how to be a leader, but a global leader.”
Kathleen Godfroy Martinez on her MBA lecturers/professors (Uni of Wollongong, Australia)
According to PSB Academy’s most recent Graduate Employment Survey (2017), conducted by a 3rd party professional research firm, 76% of its full-time local degree graduates obtained jobs within 6 months after graduation. Close to 7 in 10 who responded feel that what PSB Academy teaches helps them perform better at work.
PSB Academy’s graduates have gone on to work in different industries and capacities. Examples of roles that they have taken on include Customer Service Agents, Medical Technologists, and accounting roles at organisations like PricewaterhouseCoopers. Some have gone on to be their own start-up founders, too.
Some students also choose to further their studies with a Postgrad degree or Masters with the school.
The school’s students have the opportunity to sign up for a 6-month Alumni Mentoring Programme that links student mentees up with Alumni mentors. Some things which the programme enables mentees to do are: obtain career insights and advice, as well as network and cope better with their entrances into the corporate world.
