Back Story
When you are close to 40years old, life begins to intensify. Mid life crisis sets in. Retrenchment happens. Financial demand increases. Some people around you pass away. That’s reality.
For me, I started to think about the meaning of life. It was at that time I left my corporate job as a civil servant. It was a stable and well-paying job: everything that my mum wanted for me, but it took me more than 30 years to find out it was not what I wanted for myself.
I am a very average Singaporean. I studied hard, graduated from NTU and got a good job. I followed my mum’s advice and saved up more than 40% of my salary each month. I was satisfied…until I learnt from some of my colleagues that my savings are being eaten up by inflation every year!
I followed one of them and invested in unit trust(honestly, I have no idea what’s that, and I still don’t know the intricacies today). In 2009, I happily put my money (about $90k) there, thinking that it is better than putting it in a bank.
The next thing I know, I lost 40% of my savings in unit trust! My hard-earned savings…
To others, it may not be a big deal, but for a conservative Asian lady like me, that was really like the end of the world. I started questioning everything. I studied so hard in school, scrimped and saved my average salary, only to have 40% of it taken away from me almost instantly. That is not fair.
Under such situation, some people binge eat. Others coop themselves at home. For me, I literally started searching day and night frantically for an answer to my question.(never push a lady to a corner)
It was a long roller-coaster ride. I met some mentors along the way.
Long story short.
Today, I am living a fulfilled life as a teacher, author and speaker on financial education. I have taught over 5300 students from across the globe, in events such as Invest Fair Singapore, Value Investing Summit and EXCEL Women's Conference.
Check out some of my students
“Prior to learning Value Investing, my investments are typically based on technical studies which did not produce the results that I want.
After a year of learning Value Investing, my investments have provided a net return of over 60%.”
- Richard Lim, Entrepreneur
“My biggest takeaway after attending the program is to practice independent thinking, and knowing how to evaluate the fundamental business value of a company or a stock.
It’s been 4 years, coming to 5 years. My compounded annual growth rate is around 30%.
I definitely recommend this program to others!”
- Min An, Senior Executive
I would also like to share with you what I have learnt over the years, regaining my financial security.
Trainer Credibility
You may be wondering: Are you sure you know your stuff, Pauline?
From young, i was taught to speak up only when I am 100% confident in what I have to say. I still believe in that.
Since 2012, I have invested $50k(leftover savings) of my own money and grew it to a multimillion dollars portfolio. Sure, there are other accomplished speakers as well, but it is one thing to know the theory, and another thing to actually grow your personal portfolio by more than 20 times. (see the proof face-to-face in my workshop)
I would also like to share with you how I turned my financial fate around, and how you can gain more financial security as well.
Benefits of learning investment
Does everyone need to learn investing? No.
You may be doing well in your job, earning good money; just like how I was, in my job as a civil servant. At that time, I’ve never thought of quitting my job.
However, financial freedom gave me a choice.
At 15-20% annual returns, my passive income from the dividends generated from stocks exceeded my expenses of 3-5 thousand dollars a month.
I could choose to continue in my job or I could choose to pursue my passion of teaching, speaking and writing. I chose the latter.
I even wrote a book. If I didn’t have my passive income supporting me, I would not be able to fork out time to pursue such interests, let alone put in so much effort to make it into a bestseller, with the 1st print selling out within 6 months!
Technically you can say I still have a job, but I don’t think of it as a job anymore. You may be in the same position. Your work drives you and keeps you active. Not everyone wants to quit their job, but having more money for the rainy day isn’t that bad, is it? The reality is that life is unpredictable.
Having money is not about being greedy. Money provides choice. To me, it means having the choice to not look at the right column of the menu at the restaurant.
The choice to go on holiday and create happy memories with my children.
More stories of our students
“I remembered telling myself "Hey, if I want to put serious money into the market, I better know what I'm doing!"
With the support from a community and learning the 3R concept in depth, I no longer have to worry about my income and retirement.”
- Vincent Yap, Ex-Senior Manager in Oil & Gas Industry
“Back in 2011 I developed a medical condition which required me to leave work. Thankfully, I was able to create a portfolio of stocks for income generation for my family. What is taught at VIC can do so much more for anyone with the heart to learn.”
- Jonathan Kevin Lai, Family Man
Why learn investing?
Do I blame my colleague for asking me to invest in Unit Trust?
No. On the same token, the financial consultant who recommended an investment package that made us lose money isn’t to be blamed. Every investment comes with risk.
The biggest lesson I learnt after losing $40,000 as an average salary person: Never never put money into something that you have no idea about.
One has to take charge of his/her own financial destiny rather than leave it to someone else.
Now, when I hear rumors asking me to invest in a particular stock because “price has gone down so much”, I know how to systematically validate if it is just a rumor or is it legitimate. I have the tool to calculate the real value of the stock instead of just following the “insider’s info” from a friend’s friend.(who knows what kind of vested interest they have?)
I am in control of my financial life.
I am glad I can give people such autonomy over their lives as well.
“After applying the investing methods I've learnt, it has allowed me to achieve consistent returns.
Making your money work hard for you is no longer a dream.”
- Hew Hwee Bee, Home Tutor
“Following the guidelines that were taught, my SGX returns have been great (up 52% since) with a couple of 2 baggers. For those starting this journey, value investing works.”
- Jonas Lim, Sales Professional
Here’s one thing I realize: If you learnt physics(or chemistry or mathematics) the same way you learn investing, your financial life will be well taken care of. Money will never be a concern.
But the school doesn’t teach us that.
That’s why it’s my mission in life to do so.
4 unique points of this workshop
This Masterclass vs other workshops
Most workshops take place over 1 evening where the speaker glosses over the ‘why’ and not the ‘how’ of investment because there simply isn’t enough time. Our masterclass stretches across the day and goes deep into the real meat of value investing.
There will be other trainers, some of whom are my mentors, such as Ken Chee and Clive Tan. It is highly valuable to hear from a community of seasoned investors who look at a stock from various perspectives. I would love for you to meet them as well.
This workshop is conducted by Value Investing College, the largest value investing training company in Singapore. 8VIC is also listed in Australia Stock Exchange and has produced 16,746 graduates over the last 8 years.
See how you can use technology to help you save time and make better decisions. VIC has developed a smart investing app called Wealthpark that has helped me and other graduates unearth a company's strength, weakness and risk profile—even when we had zero investing knowledge when we first started out .
- 16,746 Graduates
- 12 Countries
- 8 Years in Operation
Disclaimer: For a limited time, it will be free. The Technology-Assisted Stock Hacking Masterclass may cease running at any time.
Target audience
How VIC, Value Investing College changed my life.
Truth be told, I knew nothing about finance. I didn’t go to school to study finance or mathematics. Neither was I good in it hence the initial decision to put money in unit trust. It was only in 2010 when I chanced upon VIC that I started to learn the concept of value investing. The beauty of VIC is that everyone started as a beginner. The methods were established over a period of 8 years. With the systems and tools in place, anyone can begin learning and doing value investing. I mean everyone.
“VIC is hard to describe in one sentence. The WOW experience in this community is really what you’re getting…Unselfish sharing and giving is what it’s about. Lots of good information. So far, this is the best programme I have ever attended.”
- Tiffany Lee, Working Mum
“With VIOS™ and Stock Investing, my family now enjoys a 4 figure passive income to safeguard our financial future. Definitely attainable if you take action.”
- Pebs Lee, Electrical and Software Engineer
