Suppose you came back home one day to hear the TV turned on so loud and the kettle whistling furiously but when you shout for your mum, she doesn’t reply…
…only for you to realise that she was sitting in the living room all along.
“Mum, why is the TV on so loud? Can’t you hear the water boiling?” you said, grabbing the remote control from her to turn the volume down.
“Oh, you’re home already?” she said, looking surprised.
“Tsk, didn’t you hear what I just said?” you lamented out of frustration as you stormed off to the kitchen to turn off the stove.
This wasn’t the first time.
Recently, you noticed that your mum has been distant and not as communicative as before.
And when you guys talk, she seems distracted in the middle of the conversation or keeps asking you to repeat what you said.
Sometimes you find yourself making hand gestures just to get a simple message across or waving at her line of sight just to catch her attention…
Which makes you suspect that she’s starting to lose her ability to hear.
But isn’t it a natural part of the aging process?
Why do I need to be worried about it?
It’s true that as we age, the wear and tear to the structures in our ear will lead to some degree of hearing loss.
But this issue can have more serious consequences than you might think.
Besides the obvious effects, a 2018 study by National University of Singapore and Ng Teng Fong General Hospital shows that there is a link between hearing loss and dementia.
This could be because patients with hearing loss tend to isolate themselves out of fear that they can’t participate in social interactions. This in turn leads to other problems like depression.
Hearing loss may also lead to a lack of independence as they may not be able to navigate by themselves when taking public transport. For instance, when taking the MRT, they may unknowingly miss their stop because they couldn’t hear the station being announced.
But what is more concerning is when a lack of hearing ability endangers their safety. For instance, when crossing the roads, they may miss the sound of incoming vehicles which may lead to accidents.
At home, if there’s an emergency, they may not hear the phone ringing or knocking on the front door, which leads to precious time being lost that can make a difference between life and death.
This is even more dangerous if your parent is living alone by themselves, so they may become uncontactable, causing you to worry if something bad has happened to them.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
With the help of our hearing devices, you can treat your parent’s hearing loss immediately within 30 minutes and prevent accidents.
And with our LIFETIME of free annual hearing assessments, we’ll be able to monitor the progress of your parent’s hearing loss and adjust the devices accordingly. This way we can ensure that their quality of life is maintained for the rest of their golden years.
Because we want to help as many people as possible, we’re offering…
1-On-1 Complimentary Hearing Assessments
A hearing assessment is the first and most crucial step in diagnosing the exact hearing problem that your parent is facing. It will help us determine whether a hearing aid can solve their problem or not. If the case is too severe, you may need to consider other solutions such as cochlear implants.
When you bring your parent down to any one of our 6 centres around Singapore, here’s what you can expect:
Step 1 – Consultation
Our professional audiologists will ask your parent and you about their hearing history and the current concerns that you have.
We’ll also share more information with you about how hearing loss occurs and the different types. You’ll understand what your parent is going through and the importance of hearing aids.
The audiologist will also explain different parts of an audiogram, which is a graph that shows the different levels of hearing loss.
Our staff can converse with your parent in English, Mandarin, Hokkien and Cantonese. If not, we always recommend the patient to be accompanied by you or a loved one. Besides, your presence will make them feel more at ease and comfortable.
Step 2 – Otoscopy
The audiologist will look inside your parent’s ear to see if there are any blockages like ear wax, any infection and whether the eardrum is intact. Any of these factors may also cause hearing loss.
If there is any, we’d advice to seek medical attention and return on another day as these conditions will affect the result of the hearing assessment.
Step 3 – Hearing Assessment
Your parent will sit inside a soundproof booth and our audiologist will play different types of sounds and he/she will make hand gestures to signal if there is any sound or not.
To ensure that the test is accurate, our audiologist will repeat each point several times to ensure that the results are consistent.
From the tests, we’ll be able to confirm if your parent is indeed having trouble hearing and what type of hearing loss.
Step 4 – Audiogram Results
We’ll show you and your parent the different points of their hearing graph for each side of their ear. You’ll learn what type of hearing loss your parent has, the cause and the extent.
Most importantly, you’ll be informed if your parent’s condition can be treated using hearing aids or not.
Step 5 – Evaluation Of Condition & Demo
Based on your parent’s audiogram, our audiologist will explain to you the best type of hearing aid for them and the differences between the various models.
We’ll also take into account other factors when recommending a model of hearing aid. For example, if your parent has hand tremors, then we won’t recommend a Behind-The-Ear-Style one as this will be difficult for them to put on by themselves.
The audiologist will then programme the hearing aid according to your parent’s needs for a live demo to let them try, see if it is comfortable and talk to you.
You’ll get to see with your very eyes the immediate improvement on the spot.
There’s nothing like seeing your parent’s face lighting up the moment they can hear your voice again. You may even notice them speaking softer as they can hear themselves talking normally. For once in a long time, they’ll feel like the world isn’t as muffled as before.
We’re even open to letting your parent take the hearing aids for a test in a noisy environment such as by walking around the public area outside our centre.
In fact, we’ve had patients who wore our devices to lunch or a work meeting before deciding to invest in a pair.
Our Promise To You
Our professional audiologist will leave the decision up to you and your parent after we share with you the results and our recommendation.
Once your parent is ready to move forward, they can get their hearing aids within 30 minutes (subject to availability, the specifications required and the ear condition).
Furthermore, to make our services affordable, we’re offering 20% off for Pioneer Generation or Merdeka Generation card holders.
In addition, we have a 0% interest monthly instalment plan over 6/12 months to ensure that your parent can get the help they need.
On top of that, should your parent decide to get hearing aids from us, they’ll be entitled to quarterly complimentary follow up appointments (U.P. $200) for the first year to fine-tune the device for them. Subsequently, they can come down to our centre for a check-up every year for free!
Hearing loss is an issue which progressively worsens over time. This is why we take all of our patient’s follow up appointments very seriously.
If your parent missed their appointment or cannot make it last minute, just call us and we’ll gladly schedule for another date as soon as possible to ensure that their condition does not go unchecked. All we ask if for you to bring your parent down to our centre and show up for their appointment.
Lastly, all our hearing aids come with a warranty of up to 4 years. So if they need to be repaired, we’ll settle everything for you and you won’t have to incur any additional cost.
