Introduction of Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, is published anually by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University to rank universities globally. The annual rankings have been conducted since 2003 and published by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy since 2009.
It was the first global ranking of universities published, earlier than the QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Its consistent and objective methodology is praised when compared with other rankings. However, it has also been criticized for its heavier focus on the natural sciences over the social sciences or humanities, and on research over the quality of instruction.
